UPDATED: Breaking News: Ono san stepping down from the Street Fighter producer position, at least for a “while”

This is just in! Street Fighter producer, Yoshinori Ono, who was recently hospitalized has dropped a bomb on his twitter, by announcing that he is stepping down from his current position as Street Fighter producer, at least for a long while.

From Ono San’s twitter: “I apologize for that. And Thanks for a lot of get-well message! I’ll refrain from work for current job for a while. Another person in charge of SF series for a while.Of course I’ll constant support to it. I’ll be out of the limelight as fighting game series for a while. I’ll think about the new future of fighting game after this. ;D

Ono san later added the following tweets: ” I can’t speak with astonishment about I got airline ticket from my boss. Whats up! I really worry about what things will be like in future. Physical health is of paramount importance. Let’s try to improve healthcare.”

This is really sad news, but i am pretty sure it is needed for Ono san’s health. Yoshinori Ono rose to fame after the successful revival of the Street Fighter franchise, with the release of street Fighter 4 in 2008. Ono then went to become one of the industry’s most loved producer, with his humor, and endless trolling. Last week, Ono was rushed to the hospital after a collapse from exhaustion during his travels to promote the recent Street Fighter X Tekken.

We wish Ono a speedy recovery and we hope he will get back as the Street Fighter producer we all known and loved.

UPDATE 1: Ono San’s twitter was updated with the following Japanese message: ” カプコンでは近日にプライベートイベントを開催する予定です。暫くの間、小野が現状の仕事を離れ、新しい担当がSFシリーズを担う事を通知する予定です。

Which translates via google to: ” Capcom is planning to hold a private event in the near future. While, Ono will leave the current job, to notify that the new charge is responsible for the SF series.
We will continue to provide official information site, through the official Blog in the future. Please wait until the next update.

So it seems pretty confirmed that Ono san will no longer be the producer of the Sf series, and that Capcom will announce who is taking charge of the franchise in a soon to be held event.

Around The Web

  1. Seems like exactly what Ono says, that he’s stepping back temporarily to take care of himself, and someone else will oversee the near future development of SF series. Read: Development of patches and “DLC” support for SFxT.

I don’t think this will have much impact at all on any new future SF games.

  2. All i can tell you guys is that this is not temporary. A new Street Fighter producer will be announced soon and he will helm Darkstalkers 4 (which will be announced soon) as well as Street Fighter 5 (which is in early stages of development).

  3. Thank god, while i wish Ono the best in his personal life and I certainly don’t want him to go away from Capcom because of the health issues, I sure won’t miss him!

Now I can only hope that whoever will take his place knows what he/she is doing…

  4. @Cap_Insider:
Can you at least tell us if it is someone we know or someone new?

  5. I don’t understand why some people expect the SF series to take a different turn now that he’s gone, Ono is the producer, not the director, the actual design choices were never his to make.

  6. @Cap_Insider:
Can you also tell us (if you know) if SF 5 chronologically-wise takes place before or after SFIII (which chronologically-wise is set after SF4).
